Sport Underwear for Men: How to Choose the Right Pair

Running, cycling, gym, hot weather. The right underwear stops chafing before it starts and stays put when you move. What actually works, and what does not.

Sport underwear does one job, keep you dry and stop skin-on-skin friction while you move. Fabric, pouch and leg length are the three things to get right. SAXX has engineered that combination since 2006, and 98% of what we sell wholesale is built around the boxer brief silhouette. The pillar guide below walks you through the full picture, then six shorter reads answer the specific questions runners, cyclists and gym-goers actually ask.

The SAXX mechanics

SAXX engineers underwear from the sweat out. DropTemp® moves moisture off the skin and cools the fabric surface, so the pair stops feeling heavy on long efforts. The BallPark Pouch® keeps skin off skin, which is where chafing starts, not where it ends. The Three-D Fit® shapes the leg to move with your stride instead of riding up on it. Three structural choices, tested where they matter, in the shorts, in the saddle, and on the mat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best underwear for running?+

The best running underwear combines a moisture-wicking fabric, a supportive pouch that stops skin-on-skin friction, and a leg length that grips the thigh without cutting it. For long efforts, a boxer brief with a longer leg outperforms a shorter cut, since it keeps the fabric on the skin where chafing usually starts.

Does moisture-wicking underwear stop chafing?+

Moisture-wicking underwear reduces the dampness that makes chafing worse, but on its own it does not prevent skin-on-skin friction. Chafing starts where two areas of skin rub, so the pouch construction and the leg length matter as much as the fabric. Wicking is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one.

Do you need different underwear for gym and running?+

For most men, a single high-quality performance boxer brief covers both. Running rewards a longer leg length that stays put on the thigh, gym work rewards a leg cut that does not restrict deep lunges. If either use is a real priority, choose accordingly. Otherwise, a solid all-purpose pair does the job.
